Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on 14 January, 2023 Saturday. About Makar Sankranti festival,president of shri kailakh jyotish avim Vedic sansthan trust,Mahant rohit shastri said Makar Sankranti is the most observed harvest festival in India.It is dedicated to Bhagwan Surya Dev,Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the sun into the zodiacal sign of Makar (Capricorn) on its celestial path, which is the first change in the zodiac after the winter solstice. The festival is celebrated to observe the day, which marks the shift of the sun into ever-lengthening days. The festival is a seasonal observance as well as a religious celebration.
Uttarayan begins from the day of Makar sankranti,Uttarayan is derived from two Sanskrit words 'uttara' or north and 'ayana' or movement, indicating a northward movement of the Sun.In Mahabharata, Bheeshma Pitamaha chose the day of Uttarayan to die. Bheeshma had a special boon of Ichha Mrityu or death according to his will and he waited on his death bed of arrows until Uttarayan.
In Tamil Nadu Makar Sankranti or Sankranthi is known as Pongal. In Gujarat and Rajasthan Makar Sankranti is known as Uttarayana. In Haryana and Punjab Makar Sankranti is known as Maghi.
On the occasion of Makar Sankranthi devotees start there day by giving argh to the pious fire .one should must give alms to to Brahmins and needy persons-on this day.
